In a separate tweet, he called on Mexico to stop caravans of Central American migrants from trying to reach the USA border.

The proposal is a variant of the Trump administration's "remain in Mexico" plan, under which asylum seekers would wait in Mexico until their cases were adjudicated in the United States. Lopez Obrador will take office on December 1.

She told Reuters that Obrador's administration was "in talks" with the usa, but stressed they could not make any agreements since they weren't yet in government.

Mexico's incoming deputy interior minister Zoe Robledo said details of the "Remain in Mexico" scheme were still being worked out.

The Post had also quoted Sanchez as saying, "For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico".

Asylum seekers will be given an initial screening to determine whether they face imminent danger by staying in Mexico, where violence is widespread.

The president has made his statement amid the situation at the country's southern border, where thousands of immigrants from the poorest Central American countries - Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador - are expecting to enter the United States from Mexico to seek asylum.

U.S. asylum officers will begin implementing the new procedures in coming days or weeks, Homeland Security officials cited by the Post said.

Judge bars USA from enforcing Trump asylum ban
District Judge Jon Tigar made in his ruling , that the president does not have the authority to rewrite immigration laws. It denied asylum to anyone who crossed the southern border without going through official ports of entry.

But by early evening, the picture grew more complex, as the incoming Mexican government said there was "no agreement of any sort". He again threatened to close the country's southern border "if it becomes necessary".

The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration has cut a deal with the incoming Mexican government potentially overhauling long-standing asylum rules; Bryan Llenas reports from West Palm Beach, Florida. He also admonished the US central bank over the cost of borrowing money.

"They're going to have to open the borders (for the migrants) to put in the request", Vences said.

"We only will allow those who come into our Country legally". "The hope is that asylum seekers will not want to live in (Mexico) for months/years and won't come", Leutert said via Twitter.

After months on the road, the men, women and children in the camp are now living on donated food, sleeping on blankets and sharing makeshift toilet facilities.

Mr Trump's administration are understood to have been exploring other options for deals that could limit the number of people from the so-called "caravan" of migrants crossing its border. He tweeted, "our very strong policy is Catch and Detain". The caravans will not be permitted to enter the United States.

Reuters noted that Sanchez "did not explicitly rule out" that Mexico could allow Central American caravan migrants ― thousands of whom have arrived in Tijuana, just south of California, in recent days ― to wait in the country while their claims are processed in the U.S. Sanchez did, however, say that plans for Mexico to assume "safe third country" status had been "ruled out".
