U.N. Security Council Calls Meeting over Russia-Ukraine Issue

Russia has stopped Ukrainian vessels entering the Sea of Asov by placing a huge cargo ship beneath a Crimean bridge

Russia has stopped Ukrainian vessels entering the Sea of Asov by placing a huge cargo ship beneath a Crimean bridge

Two gunboats were captured and a tug was forced to stop, a statement said.

According to the Ukrainian navy, six sailors were injured when the Russian ship resorted to unprovoked firing on Ukraine's vessels near the strait.

Since Russia annexed Crimea, tension has risen with both countries complaining about shipping delays and harassment.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has joined a chorus of western calls for Russian Federation and Ukraine to show restraint as the United Nations security council prepared to meet on Monday amid a risky new crisis between the two countries and fears of a wider military escalation.

Russia's Federal Security Service, known as the FSB and which oversees the coast guard, said there was "irrefutable evidence that Kiev prepared and orchestrated provocations.in the Black Sea".

It added: "These materials will soon be made public".

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said "Russian special forces have taken over some ships".

Ukraine accused Moscow of illegally seizing three of its naval ships off Russia-annexed Crimea on Sunday after opening fire on them, a charge that if confirmed could ignite a unsafe new crisis between the two countries.

The Ukrainian vessels apparently wanted to travel through the strait to other ports in Ukraine.

Earlier on Sunday, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaking worldwide law after Russian border guards tried and failed to stop Ukrainian ships circumnavigating Crimea en route to a Ukrainian port.

An video by a conflict-related Twitter account claimed to show video of a Russian vessel ramming a smaller Ukrainian vessel. It said the Russian ship damaged the tugboat's engine, hull, side railing and a lifeboat.

"We need new sanctions against Russia", Ukraine's ambassador to the European Union Mykola Tochitsky said in a tweet on Monday. The only waterway that connects the two is the Kerch Strait between Crimea and mainland Russian Federation.

The Kerch bridge is seen blocked for ships entrance, near Kerch, Crimea, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018.

They then boarded and seized all three vessels, capturing 23 Ukrainian sailors, in an operation involving attack helicopters and fighter jets.

Russia's foreign ministry accused Ukraine of deliberately provoking the incident, with spokesperson Maria Zakharova telling state television that Moscow will summon a senior Ukrainian diplomat to complain.

"Having breached this morning the Russian border, the three Ukrainian ships - the Berdyansk, the Nikopol and the Yani Kapu - tried again on November 25 at 19:00 (Moscow time) to conduct illegal actions in Russian territorial waters", the FSB said. It did not mention that a Ukrainian tugboat was rammed.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in a statement said Russia's actions were a violation of the UN Charter.
