Uganda boat which sank was carrying more than twice its capacity



She said that 27 people were rescued overnight, lower than earlier reports.

At least 35 people died in a boat accident on Lake Victoria in Uganda on Saturday, according to the Ugandan Police Force.

Uganda's Director of Police Operations, Asuman Mugenyi said 28 bodies were recovered on Sunday, adding "we can not now tell when this operation will end, it will be determined by number of recoveries we have made".

Overloading and bad weather were likely to blame, according to authorities.

Bodies have been taken to Kampala City Mortuary for post-mortem.

Video footage said to be of revellers on the boat before it capsized showed them dancing and drinking while posing for the camera. It has never been approved and licensed to operate and never been inspected.

Ugandan media named a number of well-known people said to be on the boat, adding that the prince of a traditional kingdom had survived.

At around 6pm on Saturday night, a boat managed by Earthwise Enterprises en-route to Mutima landing site in Mukono capsized, killing several revelers who were on board for a boat cruise.

Instead, local fishermen went to help. "The rescuers died too", said one Richard kayongo.

"People kept coming on the fishing boats and (one man) was overwhelmed".

Ganyana said the boat was in poor condition and had been grounded for some time.

The boat's owner and his wife were among the dead. "Help us!' and the boat was sinking very quickly,"... "It was overloaded and unfortunately people were drunk", Mugenyi said.

Police spokesman Emilian Kayima said rescue efforts were continuing.

Speaker of Parliament Ms. Rebecca Kadaga has mourned all those that perished in a boat accident that occurred on Lake Victoria on weekend.

With a surface area of 70,000 square kilometres, oval-shaped Lake Victoria is roughly the size of Ireland and is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

More than 20 people have been rescued from the water, police say, but an unknown number remain missing.

But special counsel prosecutors were "not getting what they want", one source with knowledge of the discussions said. His attorneys say in the same filing that he believes he "provided truthful information".
