Canada imposes sanctions on Saudi nationals linked to Khashoggi murder

Graham won’t vote on anything until CIA director talks to Senate about Khashoggi murder

The Canadian government took its first concrete measure Thursday to protest the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia's Turkish Embassy last month.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in Argentina and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security, energy and investments, the Saudi Press Agency (SPS) said on Friday.

The Trump administration launched a furious last-minute lobbying campaign aimed at stopping the resolution, including a briefing in the Senate on Wednesday morning with Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. On Wednesday, the Senate voted 63 to 37 to advance a bipartisan resolution on halting usa support for Saudi forces in Yemen. U.S. intelligence officials believe the Saudi crown prince must have at least known of the plot to kill him. But Harnett said commissioners were outraged by Khashoggi's killing, as well as President Trump's reaction to it, and felt the need to take action on an global issue.

A media release from Global Affairs Canada said these Saudis "are, in the opinion of the Government of Canada, responsible for or complicit in the extrajudicial killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2, 2018".

"Saudi Arabia is a permanent member of the G-20 and, as such, he is attending".

Pochettino says Spurs can beat Barcelona and make knockout round
It is a must-win fixture for Tottenham as they seek a place in the knockout stages of the competition. "We will try to play the ideal game". "All is possible in football", the Spurs manager said.

The conclusions, and the fact that CIA Director Gina Haspel didn't appear, angered some senators.

And Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who is often strongly allied with Trump, voted to move forward with the resolution and said he would insist on a briefing from Haspel. The Trump administration has refused to rebuke Mohammed Bin Salman or imperil the long-standing US relationship with the kingdom. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch last week accused Saudi Arabia of subjecting several activists - including some female human-rights defenders detained since May - to torture and sexual harassment, allegations denied by a Saudi official.

Wednesday's vote did not pass the resolution; rather, it discharged the resolution from committee, bypassing an important procedural hurdle and guaranteeing that it will get a vote on the Senate floor, likely sometime next week. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, fell six votes short of passage earlier this year.

"This case is not closed", she said.

Saudi Arabia has said that 21 people are in custody, with death penalties sought against five men. His language was blunt in a Wall Street Journal article, writing that Khashoggi's murder "has heightened the Capitol Hill caterwauling and media pile-on". Trump has praised a pending arms deal with the kingdom that he says will provide the US with jobs and lucrative payments, though some outside assessments say the economic benefits are exaggerated.
