Paul Caneiro then set a fire in the basement of the sprawling home that smoldered for several hours before erupting into an inferno, Gramiccioni said.
Prosecutors say financial motives led a technology executive in the USA state of New Jersey to kill his brother, the brother's wife and their young children before setting fire to their two homes. Prior to the alleged homicides, Caneiro had previously been charged with arson for setting fire to his own home in Ocean Township with his wife and two daughters inside.
When police arrived at the scene, they found 50-year-old Keith Caneiro shot to death outside of the home and his wife and children stabbed to death inside of the home.
The law firm representing Caneiro said they would not comment until after the prosecutor's news conference.
The complaint did not disclose a motive, and a spokesman for the Monmouth County prosecutor said there would be no comment until an 11 a.m. news conference. Hours later, the blaze at the home of his brother Keith was reported about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away in Colts Neck. Because of that, investigators are also looking into the defendant's business dealings, Gramiccioni said.
