Paul Caneiro then set a fire in the basement of the sprawling home that smoldered for several hours before erupting into an inferno, Gramiccioni said.

Prosecutors say financial motives led a technology executive in the USA state of New Jersey to kill his brother, the brother's wife and their young children before setting fire to their two homes. Inside, authorities found the remains of his 45-year-old wife, Jennifer Caneiro, and their children, 11-year-old son Jesse and 8-year-old daughter Sophia.

Authorities gather to investigate the aftermath of fatal fire where two children and two adults in Colts Neck, New Jersey on November 21.

Prior to the alleged homicides, Caneiro had previously been charged with arson for setting fire to his own home in Ocean Township with his wife and two daughters inside.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 50-year-old Keith Caneiro shot to death outside of the home and his wife and children stabbed to death inside of the home.

The law firm representing Caneiro said they would not comment until after the prosecutor's news conference.

The complaint did not disclose a motive, and a spokesman for the Monmouth County prosecutor said there would be no comment until an 11 a.m. news conference. Hours later, the blaze at the home of his brother Keith was reported about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away in Colts Neck. Because of that, investigators are also looking into the defendant's business dealings, Gramiccioni said.

Paul Caneiro, 51, was charged with four counts of murder, one count of aggravated arson, one count of possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a knife, Gramiccioni said.

Keith Caniero and Paul Caneiro worked together, according to online records. The second fire was a ruse meant to make it appear the extended family was a target, the prosecutor said.

Paul Caneiro, 51, was charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of his brother and family.

Keith Caneiro was the CEO of tech company Square One in Asbury Park and Paul Caneiro was listed as the vice president of the company. Workers in the area frequently saw Paul Caneiro there.

Paul Caneiro's wife and adult daughters are also members, but Paul Caneiro, who was in a serious auto accident a few years ago, was not.

Caneiro's attorneys, Robert Honecker and Mitchell Ansell, said their client loved his brother's family, had no reason to harm them and had been "wrongly accused".

Funeral services for Caneiro family are planned for Sunday, the AP reports.
