A 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake Just Shook Alaska

Powerful quake rattles Alaska creates huge fissures on roads

A powerful quake shook southern Alaska on Friday morning, buckling roads, disrupting traffic and knocking television stations off the air in the state's largest city, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first and more powerful quake was centered about 12km north of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city.

The quake also triggered a tsunami warning for Cook Inlet and the Southern Kenai Peninsula.

And yet, Alaska is frequently overshadowed by another earthquake-prone state. It damaged nearby businesses and sent shockwaves through homes. More than a dozen were higher than magnitude 4 and a handful greater than magnitude 5.

Anchorage Police Chief Justin Doll says he is unaware of reports of deaths or serious injuries following the quake that rocked the state's largest city. The full extent of the damage isn't yet clear, but people have already posted photos and videos on social media of what they experienced.

Walker says it will take more than a week or two to fix roads damaged by the natural disaster. People ran from their offices or took cover under desks.

President Trump also issued an emergency declaration for Alaska.

"Many roads and bridges are closed".

"There is major infrastructure damage across Anchorage", said the Anchorage Police Department in a bulletin, according to ABC News.

She grew up in California and was familiar with earthquakes "but this was next-level", she said.

"With a slip rate of more than 2 inches per year, this fault may be one of the fastest-moving strike-slip faults in the world", Baldwin said. Rock falls exacerbated by the aftershocks were causing some problems on the Seward Highway south of Anchorage.

Randy Van Ness mops an aisle at Andy's Ace Hardware after a 7.0-magnitude quake hit in Anchorage, Alaska, Friday, Nov. 30.

The Anchorage School District canceled classes Monday and Tuesday to assess facility damage. He said he wondered if Friday's quake "could be the one".

An natural disaster of magnitude 7.0 and higher can cause, at minimum, considerable damage in normal structures and can destroy poorly constructed structures, according to the USGS.

A devastating 1964 Alaska natural disaster - the most powerful on record in the United States - led to stricter building codes that helped structures withstand the shifting earth Friday.
