The 47-year-old was with another former Springbok, Os du Randt, but the latter was not injured.

Marzanne said they had never been the victims of such a crime and she thought Du Randt was joking when he phoned her.

Both players were part of the South Africa squad who won the World Cup in 1995 in an emotional triumph soon after the end of apartheid.

Tinus Drotske said: 'Naka jumped up and stormed them, and then they shot him three times, and then they luckily fled.

"I had a chat with Os this morning".

He required an operation but remains there in a stable condition.
