The chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has been arrested in Canada and is now facing extradition to the United States in connection with alleged violations of Iran sanctions. The ban was sought by Meng, who has a bail hearing Friday, he said.

"The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng", Huawei said.

"Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the Chief Financial Officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for breaking USA sanctions against Iran, " he said.

Like ZTE, Huawei relies in part on United States technology imports for its products, and per USA export regulations, those products are in turn prohibited from being exported to Iran and other restricted nations.

In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that Huawei was being investigated by NY prosecutors on suspicion of breaking the Iran sanctions.

Huawei Technologies, launched in 1987 in Shenzhen China, has been the largest telecommunication equipment producer in the world since 2012.

"The arrest of Huawei's CFO by the Canadian government for potential violations of Iran sanctions is welcome and I urge prompt extradition to the US", Rubio was quoted as saying in a statement to The Globe.

Luka Modric wins Ballon d'Or 2018 ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo
It will be the first time since since the 2007 Ballon d'Or , which was won by Kaka, will go to a new recipient. He was named in the Champions League "Team of the Season" and won the UEFA "Midfielder of the Season".

A US judge last month issued an order finding that China's ZTE Corp violated probation imposed in March 2017 when the company pleaded guilty for conspiring to evade USA sanctions by illegally shipping USA goods and technology to Iran.

Meng's arrest comes as Ottawa and Beijing have been engaged in exploratory talks on a free trade agreement for the past two years, which would be the first deal of its kind between China and a western country.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that the Justice Department had launched a criminal probe into Huawei's dealings in Iran, following administrative subpoenas on sanctions-related issues from both the Commerce Department and the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

It comes amid deepening suspicions of Huawei in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

Meng, who is also a vice chair on Huawei's board, was arrested on December 1 in Vancouver.

Huawei New Zealand deputy chief executive Andrew Bowater said regarding the developments in Britain, that BT had inherited its mobile networks that contained Huawei equipment at their core as a result of its acquisition of mobile operator EE in 2016. Huawei makes telecom equipment and personal electronics sold worldwide. For example, a management company that was controlled by Huawei's parent company in 2007 held all of Skycom's shares, and Meng at the time was that management firm's company secretary, Reuters reported.
