Libya: 5 dead in attack on foreign ministry building in Tripoli

The last attack claimed by IS targeted Tripoli's foreign ministry on Tuesday, killing three and causing major damage to one of the capital's supposedly most secure buildings.

In a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency Wednesday, IS says three fighters infiltrated the area and fired on Foreign Ministry workers.

Twenty-one other people were wounded in the attack, authorities said.

10 others were injured in the morning attack, the Health Ministry said.

Libya has been a haven for Islamic militants since the toppling of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The attack occurred at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT), when a vehicle bomb exploded right behind the ministry's building, an official of Libyan Foreign Ministry told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The British ambassador to Libya called the attack "appalling", while Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said his government stands in "solidarity with the Libyan people and their just aspiration to real security". The country is divided between several rival entities, including the presence in Tripoli of a government of national unity (GNA), supported by the worldwide community and in the East, a parallel cabinet backed by the Libyan National Army (NLA), self-proclaimed by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

UN Support Mission in Libya condemned the attack.

ISIS has been responsible for a series of attacks in the country which, since 2011, has been torn by power struggles and become prey to jihadists. The Tripoli government is recognized by the United Nations.

Four months earlier, it claimed an attack on the electoral commission's headquarters which left 14 dead.
