Germany Airport Closed After Man Crashes Car Onto Runway

Hanover airport in Germany is on lockdown after a man drove through the gate in an attempt to get on to the runway.

Police said a man broke through a barrier in a vehicle which went onto the runway.

They said the man tried to follow a landing plane operated by Greek airline Aegean.

Bomb disposal experts were examining the vehicle.

Hannover police said on Twitter that officers had stopped the vehicle and overwhelmed the man. While the terminal area remained open, however, a police statement from the local force claimed that the security areas were "currently vacated".

The man was believed to have acted alone.

Trump to withdraw 'significant' troops from Afghanistan
A spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani said "if there is any reaction by the Afghan government, we will share it later". USA officials are engaged in talks with the Taliban, who now control a significant amount of territory.

He managed to drive several hundred metres before being stopped.

The driver could have been on drugs as the incident unfolded, NDR said, adding that the quick on-site drug test was "positive".

Take-offs and landings of planes resumed shortly after 8pm, local time. They said the man wasn't carrying an identity card.

It wasn't immediately clear how long flight operations would be suspended. Other tips involved possible extremists surveilling German airports. According to Eurocontrol, the airport remains closed until 20:00 UTC'.

The worldwide airport in Hannover handled 5.87 million passengers previous year, though it isn't one of Germany's top hubs.
