Five million workers will get a raise on January 1 when new minimum wage requirements take effect in 20 states and almost two dozen cities around the U.S.

In Georgia and Wyoming, the minimum wage is lower than the federal level at $5.15 an hour, and five states do not require a minimum wage by law, according to the Department of Labor.

The minimum wage per hour for tipped employees rises to $5.44.

For some NY workers, the final phase of the state's minimum wage increase will take effect on Monday, Dec. 31.

The minimum wage in Korea is calculated by dividing the monthly salary by the number of working hours.

Employers face a fine of $1,000 per violation if they are found liable for intentionally violating minimum wage requirements.

Up until a few decades ago, many economists anxious that raising the minimum wage would lead to employers hiring fewer workers.

The state and local wage laws come amid a multi-year push by unions and liberal advocacy groups to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour nationwide.

Despite the national movement to raise wages for low-income workers, the state minimum wage is vastly different across the country. It took another year for voters to raise the statewide minimum wage.

The state of NY put out a compliance hotline for employees to report any employee who is not following the change in law.

The states raising the minimum wage in 2019 are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington and Vermont, according to NELP. Since then, 29 states, and more than 40 cities or counties, have hiked their minimums above the federal $7.25.

OH is one of 18 states adjusting wages in 2019. Since they still have six months to go, they're taking their time and haven't yet decided what the new minimum wage will be.
