Numerous remainder of the questions Paine faced revolved around how Australia, who travel to England for an Ashes series later this year, could get better.

In a dramatic u-turn taken by the BCCI, it has emerged that R Ashwin will be assessed before the toss on Thursday morning to see if he can slot into India's XI for the Sydney Test against Australia.

"If we think India were to play two spinners Pete could be a really important player for us", Paine said.

Paine said it was crucial that the batsmen play their part in Sydney, with none of them getting more than 50 in Melbourne with the exception of tailender Pat Cummins. Ishant Sharma, who was excellent in the previous Test, was excluded though there was no clarity on why that was.

Ishant is out after experiencing discomfort in his left rib cage and the team management didn't want to risk him by playing him in the decider.

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav was named as his replacement. We need him to be 100 per cent fit.

Then, Australia had already relinquished the Ashes on home soil for the first time in a quarter of a century and their hopes of a series-levelling win were shattered by England's rampant bowling attack in an innings and 83-run defeat.

Nonetheless, in 2004-05, Australia were a class apart as they conquered one of the toughest challenges in world cricket - beat India in India and ended a 34-year-long drought for a series win in the Asian nation.

It's worth remembering that it was not so long ago that Jadeja was included in the thirteen for the Perth Test, but did not feature in the playing eleven in a game where Nathan Lyon was Man of the Match as Australia won.

India squad: Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

The other toss-up is between opener Aaron Finch and leg-spin all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne.

They are contemplating changes to the batting line-up however as Aaron Finch could be sacrificed or drop down the order and Mitch Marsh could also make way with Peter Handscombe and Marnus Labuschagne candidates to come into the side with the latter's spin being an attractive option to Paine.

"If that's the way we go, Usman will go out and give his all as he always does", said Australia skipper Tim Paine.
