Xi Jinping on Tuesday held talks with Kim Jong Un, who arrived in Beijing on the same day for a visit to China.

North Korea will "make efforts for the second summit between (North Korean) and USA leaders to achieve results that will be welcomed by the worldwide community", Kim was quoted as saying by China's official Xinhua News Agency.

Kim left for China on a private train on Monday afternoon accompanied by his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and senior North Korean officials, including Kim Yong Chol, a key negotiator in talks with the United States, and foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency said. "Judging from the delegation lineup, the mission appears to place emphasis on North Korea's continuing diplomatic outreach and nuclear and security issues", Aoki said.

Trump and Kim met in Singapore last June for the first-ever leaders' meeting between their nations, but there has been a standoff ever since.

Trump said last week that he will be setting up a meeting with Kim "in the not-too-distant future" to restart talks about the North's nuclear programs after their summit in Singapore last summer.

Kim, for his part, welcomed China's readiness to "jointly study and steer" the situation to help ease tensions, as well as the positive role Beijing continues to play in the negotiations process, KCNA said. "China and the DPRK are friendly and close neighbours and it is also an important tradition for us to maintain friendly exchanges", Lu said, referring to North Korea's formal name.

If Xi Jinping has lit a fire under Kim's butt to bring him back to the table and start tearing down his warheads and missles, he may wind up doing us a far bigger favor than any new trade deal.

Shi Yinhong, an worldwide relations professor at Renmin University in Beijing, said Kim's trip would have no direct influence on the progress of trade talks.

United States firms that rely on Chinese consumers have also been impacted by the country´s economic slowdown. Its one-sentence announcement gave no other details of the agenda or who else would take part.

As VOA's Bill Gallo reports, the North Korean leader may be hoping to use the visit to increase his leverage with Washington.

U.S. strategic assets in the region involved not only North Korea, "but also overall stability and peace in Northeast Asia", Moon said.

Xi was quoted by Xinhua as saying that China supports the U.S.

"Kim Jong-un understands that the issue is entirely up to the decision of South Korea and the United States".

There was a "rare historic opportunity" for a political settlement on the peninsula, Xi said according to Xinhua, and China "supports the DPRK and the United States holding summits and achieving results".

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed hope that interested parties will provide assistance in the process of denuclearlization on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea and Japan share a bitter history that includes Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the Korean Peninsula, the forced mobilization of labor at Japanese companies and other issues.

But Hua said Kim's visit would have a "limited" effect on the trade negotiations.

Each of the previous Kim-Xi meetings have come shortly before or after the North Korean's summits with either Trump or South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
