Australian Open: Serena and Venus Williams through to second round

This was quite a return for Serena Williams.

Williams made headlines past year when she hit the court for the French Open in a skintight black catsuit, marking her first tournament since giving birth to baby daughter Alexis Olympia.

Williams posted a photo of herself from the match, with a reference to her last Australian Open appearance when she was pregnant.

She was in tears as the pair hugged at the net following the match, and Williams joined the crowd in giving the German player a clap as she left the arena. "Hopefully I can follow up on this victory tonight with a good performance".

Whichever route he takes, the former world number one will have at least some regrets over how his career panned out, despite having won two Wimbledon titles, the US Open, two Olympic gold medals and the Davis Cup. Her baby, Olympia, was born on September 1, 2017, and Williams was off the tour until last March. In May 2018, she made headlines for wearing a skin-tight black catsuit to the French Open.

She also named her all-in-one jumpsuit a "Serena-tard". Did we expect Serena to play at a level so high that it seemed she, not Caroline Wozniacki, is the defending champion protecting her aqua-blue turf?

The younger Williams sister has no interest in that sort of comparison now.

"Just now, like, going to walk my dogs, playing football with my friends, is like the worst thing I can think of doing". "I got a ways to go".

"But I've done everything right in my preparation".

Double-decker bus crash leaves 3 dead, 23 injured in Ottawa
Politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, tweeted messages of support. Three people died; two were believed to have been on the bus, and one person was waiting on the platform.

Williams holds the most Open Era singles titles, but is looking to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24.

"I wanted to be fit", she said.

Williams is the favourite to win today's match. If I go ahead with the operation and I don't recover well from it, then I don't play again.

Roger Federer, who will play Dan Evans next after a straight-sets win over Denis Istomin, led the accolades for Murray. "It's weird walking back on -- by myself this time -- it feels good".

Andreescu will play No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova in the second round.

Despite carrying an injury, the Briton was up for the challenge as he bounced back from two sets down to push the match into the fifth.

The Serb blasted past American qualifier Mitchell Krueger 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who he beat in Melbourne to win the first of his 14 Grand Slam crowns back in 2008.

Despite vigorous attempts to salvage the match, the two-time Wimbledon champion lost a nail-biting, five-set thriller to Spaniard Roberto Bautista 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 2-6.
