Trump's move to ground the speaker came after Pelosi threatened Trump's planned January 29 State of the Union address, saying the shutdown raised concerns about whether the forum could have adequate security.

President Donald Trump has told supporters in a conference call that the shutdown will continue, in his words, "for a long time" if it has to. Donald Ritchie, former historian of the Senate, said that anytime a president comes to speak, it must be at the request of Congress. Trump could opt to deliver a speech somewhere else, like the Oval Office, but it would not have the same ritualistic heft.

Informed by a reporter that they too could walk into the Senate chamber, they instead made a decision to go back to the House side but not before getting mixed up and accidentally walking the wrong way first.

On Monday, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey introduced the funding bill, along with a separate stopgap measure that would provide funding to the government through February 28, which is expected to come to the floor on Thursday, as per the report. He'd think the pressure tactic had worked, and he'd have plenty of opportunities to do the same in the near future, they say.

The Washington Post reported that Food and Drug Administration workers also have been called to work without pay during the shutdown.
