Kei Nishikori reflects on U.S. Open

Kei Nishikori reflects on U.S. Open

I'm happy if I look the big picture.

There, he had a colossal chance to score the win, creating three break points at 4-4 that Kei successfully defended to survive and reach the match tie break that he claimed 10-7 to cross the finish line first and secure the place in the last 32.

Despite the massive deficit on serve - Karlovic rocketed 59 aces to Nishikori's nine - the Shimane native appeared to have rounded into better form than he displayed in his narrow first-round victory over Polish qualifier Kamil Majchrzak, who retired with injuries midway through the fifth set on Tuesday.

But it was the manner of his win in London in November - dismissing Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 a day after a 7-5, 7-6 triumph over Federer - that had people believing the German had turned the corner and would be a major force in 2019.

"It feels like 4 hours passed by in about 15 minutes".

The pair traded games again in the third set, but Karlovic, 10 years Nishikori's senior, broke the eighth seed's serve to go up 6-5, and served out the set. "I was very fortunate to stay alive in that fourth set".

"He nearly had it for sure", said the three-time quarterfinalist at Melbourne Park, after collapsing to his knees in relief as he was cheered on by a large Japanese contingent on Margaret Court Arena.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Naomi Osaka swept past Tamara Zidansek in straight sets to reach the Australian Open third round as she targets a second Grand Slam title.

Gary Kubiak to join Minnesota Vikings in offensive advisory role
The Denver Broncos have hired former Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell to be their new defensive coordinator. Klint spent the last three seasons as an offensive asisstant for the Broncos under Kubiak and his successor Vance Joseph.

Nishikori, who is 10 years younger than Karlovic, has endured two epic scraps this week so far at Melbourne Park.

"I had to reload in the fifth", he said.

This tournament marks Williams' 19th main draw appearance at the Australian Open to lead active players, and an open-era record 81st overall Grand Slam. I really returned well - focussed well. "It was a great match", Nishikori said.

Osaka was in no mood to hang around after rain delayed the start of play as the roof on Margaret Court Arena was closed. But as even as the match was in many respects - Raonic won only two more points overall, 163-161 - Wawrinka couldn't come through when he really needed to. But she made amends in the next game and saw off two break points from Zidansek before bringing up two match points on serve.

Novak Djokovic was also victorious, sweeping Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday. Tsonga, who has had his own fitness issues in recent years and is now ranked No 177 in the world, beat Martin Klizan 6-4, 6-4, 7-6.

Hsieh Su-wei advanced 6-3, 6-4 over Laura Siegemund, who had beaten two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the first round. Other women through included Italy's Camila Giorgi, who plays Pliskova next, and China's impressive 21st seed Wang Qiang.

WTA Finals victor Elina Svitolina beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-4, 6-1 in 67 minutes, No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova beat teenage Canadian qualifier Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and No. 21 Wang Qiang Wang had a 6-2, 6-3 win over Aleksandra Krunic.

Rod Laver Arena has afternoon matches between Milos Raonic and former champion Stan Wawrinka and top-ranked Simona Halep against American Sofia Kenin.
