Microsoft No Longer Sees Cortana as a Competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant

Windows 10 Mobile will receive its last patches and security updates on December 10 this year, as Microsoft winds down the last remaining bit of development on its smartphone platform. The mobile OS soon lost popularity to the rising presence of Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

Further, a Microsoft support page noted that Windows 10 Mobile version 1709, released in Octobober 2017, was the last update.

This is not the first phase in Microsoft's mobile platform wind-down.

Microsoft has now officially confirmed that the company will stop supporting these devices by 10th of December 2019.

The good news, if there is any, is that Windows Mobile market share was always tiny to begin with, and now is largely infinitesimal: 0.10 percent, according to NetMarketShare.

Rather than planning a Cortana-powered smart speaker or other device, Nadella has demoted Cortana, signaling that Microsoft wants to focus on bringing it to other platforms as a "skill". As of now, Windows has not announced any progress with the project Andromeda or any substitute to the Windows mobile phone aside from opting for other devices.

Before new iterations of the operating system are delivered to all users, the American tech giant offers a look at forthcoming features through its Windows Insider Programme.

Customers who plan to run devices with Windows 10 Mobile after support end are encouraged to craete manual backups; this is done under Settings Update & Security Backup More Options Back up now.

There are lots of reasons Windows failed on mobile. One can't help but wonder what could have been if Microsoft had made a few different decisions with its mobile strategy.

That way, Google and Amazon's voice assistants can benefit from Cortana's capabilities, getting even better at what they do, with a (presumably small) piece of the resulting revenue going to Microsoft.

Starting with the next big Windows 10 system update, codenamed 19H1, the operating system will allocate a portion of your PC's hard drive as reserved storage for important system updates and temporary files (periodically deleting them as necessary).
