Mom: 3-year-old found after 2 days missing is doing well

An "emergency search" is now underway for a 3-year-old North Carolina boy who reportedly went missing while playing in his grandmother's yard on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Casey was first reported missing Tuesday afternoon after the two children he was outside playing with went inside Casey's grandmother's house without him.

"We lost my ... grandson", said Casey's great-grandmother on the call, CNN affiliate WCTI reported.

Police in North Carolina are looking for a missing toddler. WTVD reported that Hathaway and the other children had been playing in his grandmother's backyard.

Almost 600 volunteers had participated in a search for Casey earlier this week, mulling through wooded areas in brutally cold temperatures for signs of the young boy.

By Wednesday almost 600 volunteers and trained professionals joined the massive search effort to find him and authorities called in divers to search surrounding ponds and lakes.

Even after he was located we were told that authorities were checking back over the section of woods.

The FBI and U.S. Marine Corps from nearby bases at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point joined the search effort on Wednesday, Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughs announced the second day of the search.

It's still uncertain where Casey was during those two days and what enabled him to stay safe.

At a news conference Thursday night, Brittany Hathaway thanked the almost 600 volunteers who turned out to search for Casey Lynn Hathaway after he went missing from his grandmother's backyard Tuesday.

Later in the conversation, the caller hinted that Casey's disappearance was out of character for him.

Sheriff Hughes said there is no sign of abduction in this case, and he thanks the departments and volunteers that came together to find Casey. "He's already asked to watch Netflix". "And I tell you we had a lot of them come in, we hit every one of them immediately and diligently, and it paid off", he told reporters.
