Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Sunny spells and coastal wintry showers on Saturday.

The Met Office has issued an amber "danger to life" warning for parts of the United Kingdom as icy roads and heavy snow up to 10cm deep is expected to settle a day after the cold snap led to disruption for airports and schools.

Manchester and Liverpool airports were at a standstill on Wednesday morning and nearly 300 schools closed across Scotland, Wales and north west England have been closed.

Southwest England and South Wales are under an amber "risk to life" heavy snow warning, as the so-called "snowbomb" heads for the coast.

The Met Office said there is a 70 per cent chance of sleet at 7pm which will turn into heavy snow by 8pm.

Friday will be overcast and breezy with outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow.

Friday will be cold and cloudy with a further possibility of more light snow, according to the Met Office.

Benton in Oxfordshire and Santon Downham, Suffolk, are among parts of England which could be coldest, and temperatures across southern areas are forecast to dip to around minus 8C (17.6F).

Commuters in many parts of the country were warned to leave work early on Thursday to ensure they got home.

Britain faced major transport disruption this morning due to ice and freezing fog after temperatures plunged well below freezing on the coldest night of winter so far.

The snowfall already exceeds the maximum 10cm of snowfall that was predicted when the forecaster issued a severe weather warning for Thursday.

Mobile phone coverage could also be affected in rural communities, as well as a "small chance" of power cuts due to the weather.
