Before the dust could even settle, the Knicks and Dallas Mavericks reached a reported agreement.

For the Mavs, this is about giving Luka Doncic a co-star to build around for, ideally, the next decade-plus.

With Hardaway, Lee, and Porzingis off of their books, the Knicks could have up to $74.6 million in projected salary cap space for next season.

Smith, the No. 9 selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, is averaging 12.9 points, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals through 32 games this season.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon (early Friday, PHL time), ESPN's Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelbourne reported that Porzingis met with team management and left them with the impression that he would prefer to be traded before next Thursday's (next Friday, PHL time) National Basketball Association trade deadline. Dallas will be praised for being bold, just as it was when it acquired Doncic on draft night, and it will be impossible to judge New York's decision without seeing if the front office can actually convince superstars to come play at Madison Square Garden.

Porzingis can become a restricted free agent this summer and, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Porzingis plans to sign the qualifying offer this summer, which will make him an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020.

- Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) January 31, 2019The Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors are among many teams expected to pursue Kristaps Porzingis in a trade, league sources tell ESPN. Porzingis is recovering from a torn ACL but my guy is nicknamed Unicorn for a reason.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are now 23-27 in a tough Western Conference, who are likely making this trade as they look to move on from the Dirk Nowitzki era. Needless to say, however, the move to acquire Porzingis while he was still injured was an investment. Once again, however, this move will partially be influenced by what Porzingis decides to do in the immediate future. Jordan is managing 11.0 points and 13.7 rebound per game, while Matthews is managing 13.1 points per game on the year. He could be a terrific component for the Mavericks if he's able to fully recover.
