"I accept responsibility for my past actions, and I am ready to do the hard work of regaining you trust", Northam said in a video statement. "This was not me in that picture".

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) delivers his State of the Commonwealth address.

Ralph Northam in a statement said Saturday that while he was not in a racist picture in his 1984 medical yearbook, he had admitted to "darkening his skin" when he participated in a Michael Jackson dance contest.

"We amplify our call for the Governor to resign", the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus added in a statement released shortly after Northam's presser.

"I believe now I am not either of the people in that photo", he continued.

"While [Northam's] career has been marked by service to children, soldiers, and constituents, I can not condone the actions from his past that, at the very least, suggest a comfort with Virginia's darker history of White supremacy, racial stereotyping, and intimidation", Fairfax continued. He said he did not buy a copy of the 1984 yearbook in which the picture appears, and he was unaware until Friday the picture was even there.

But he said he did darken his face during a dance contest in 1984 when he was 24, the same year he graduated and the yearbook was published.

Northam said he regrets he didn't understand "the harmful legacy of an action like that".

"What has happened, I finally had a chance to sit down and look at the photo in detail". We can generally rely on what each other said to be accurate.

Northam's efforts do not appear to be successful so far.

"That is not my picture, that is not my person", he said.

"People calling for his resignation, or Steve King's for that matter, they have a right to do so", Barber said.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii said if Northam, "cannot win back the trust of his constituents, he must resign".

Northam also denied that he was ever drunk enough to not remember appearing in a costume like that.

Northam continues to resist calls from both parties to resign. He said the school wouldn't have tolerated anyone attending a party in blackface.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, campaigning in the first primary state of New Hampshire, initially stopped short of calling for resignation, telling reporters she'd not seen the picture that she still called "very racist".

An hour after he made that statement, Northam said he realized that it was not him in the image after all. I recognize that it will take time and serious effort to heal the damage this conduct has caused.

Northam has faced multiple calls to resign, including from the Virginia Branch of the Democratic Party, as well as African American presidential hopefuls Senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris.

"We just finished meeting with the governor".

His revised comments came as politicians and black activists nationwide called on him to resign. "Governor Northam should step down, seek forgiveness, and through good deeds earn the respect of the African-American Community". McAuliffe and Northam had a "long talk" before the former governor's Friday statement went out, according to a source with knowledge of the call, and McAuliffe informed Northam that he was going to publicly ask for his ouster.

In a medical school yearbook photo that emerged Friday, one man, alleged to be Northam, appears in blackface, while another wears a KKK hood.

The photo was first reported by conservative website Big League Politics.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. surfaced Saturday morning as one of Northam's many detractors.

Chanting for him to resign, the protestors excoriated Northam for the photo.

Protesters gathered in front of Northam's office in Richmond, Virginia, waving signs demanding he step down. "An apology now isn't enough". The photo appears with others I submitted on a page with my name on it.

"This behavior is not in keeping with who I am today and the values I have fought for throughout my career in the military, in medicine, and in public service", he said.

Ralph Northam on Saturday rejected calls to step down following controversy involving a racist photo from his yearbook.
