The search for a missing plane carrying Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala has resumed after efforts were suspended at sunset last night.

The Argentine footballer and a pilot are missing since their small place, that was flying from Nantes to Wales became unresponsive on Monday evening while flying off the coast of Guernsey, an island situated between the United Kingdom and France.

It was resumed at 8:00am on Tuesday morning but no traces of the aircraft have been found.

Sala was signed from the Nantes club on 19 January for a record £15m fee (AU$27 million).

In one of his last social media posts, Sala shared a photo of his former Nantes teammates, captioning the image "Ciao" alongside several heart emojis.

The 28-year-old Nantes striker was announced as a new signing for Premier League club Cardiff City on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Nantes has postponed its Wednesday French Cup match with L'Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien amid the search for Sala.

A statement from police on Guernsey, a British island just off the coast of France, said lifeboats and helicopters had searched for several hours for the plane on Monday night, which had two people on board, without success.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has expressed sympathy for the family of compatriot Emiliano Sala, who was on a plane that disappeared over the English Channel on Monday.

"Coming to Emiliano's case, the authorities stated that they have searched for 1,155 square miles and did spot some floating objects on water, but weren't able to confirm if they were from the missing plane".

"After all this time, the weather's quite cold, the water is very cold out there". It lost radar contact at 2,300 feet (700 m), the police said.

Sala has scored 13 league goals this season in all competitions for Nantes this season. "Dad, how scared am I!"

"We still have crews out searching, and once they return later today (Wednesday) they will file a report, at which point we hope to issue a full statement".
