Academy confirms Oscars to go without host for first time in 30 years

The comedian stepped down in December, just hours after he was announced as the host, after homophobic tweets he posted nearly eight years ago resurfaced. No replacement was announced but there had been no official statements on how the ceremony would proceed.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards will air live February 24 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

The Portuguese tactician spent three years in charge of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 and won a Spanish league title. The former Manchester United manager was accused of owing Spanish tax authorities almost €3.3 million (£2.9million).

"We have a very exciting opener planned", ABC president Karey Burke teased at the Television Critics Association on Tuesday (via The Hollywood Reporter), adding, "We are not going to go straight into people thanking their agents". The head of ABC Entertainment, which airs the Academy Awards ceremony, said it would instead highlight celebrities presenting the trophies. While Burke wouldn't confirm which categories might be getting axed for television, she did talk up the performances.

She added that speculation over the shape of the ceremony was an encouraging sign that the Oscars were still relevant. "We have a phenomenal music show if we just wanted to put that on".

"Ironically, the lack of clarity surrounding the Oscars has kept the Oscars really in the conversation and the mystery has been compelling. That's the best way to keep the show to a brisk three hours".

"I think we are going to see a big turnout for this because these are big popular movies that have been nominated", she said.
