Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said on Thursday he was the target of "extortion and blackmail" by the publisher of the National Enquirer, which he said threated to publish "intimate photos" of him unless he stopped investigating how other private photos and messages were obtained by the tabloid.

Bezos then hired a team of private investigators to find out how the tabloid got the texts and photos the two exchanged. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment other than to confirm that Bezos wrote the post. Emails published by Bezos appeared to show Enquirer executives threatening to publish a series of salacious photos of him and Sanchez if the demands were not met.

He also pointed to reports that the Enquirer's publisher - American Media Inc chief executive officer David Pecker - has worked before on behalf of the President.

His blog contained itemised details of 10 pictures in an email from the magazine's editor Dylan Howard, who said they had been "obtained during our newsgathering". "I hope common sense can prevail - and quickly".

The Amazon boss didn't try to hide the potential for embarrassment, writing "of course I don't want personal photos published" and noting what he called "AMI's long-earned reputation for weaponising journalistic privileges".

"It's unavoidable that certain powerful people who experience Washington Post news coverage will wrongly conclude I am their enemy", Mr Bezos said in his post.

Sounds like soon some people at The National Enquirer are going to "learn to code".

In December, AMI told prosecutors it coordinated with Trump's presidential campaign to pay a Playboy model $150,000 in hush money.

Mr Bezos and his wife announced last month that they were divorcing after 25 years of marriage, following a period of "loving exploration" and trial separation.

De Becker mentioned in a recent Daily Beast interview that "strong leads point to political motives" - and that he was interested in Lauren Sanchez's brother Michael, a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump with links to his inner circle, as a possible perpetrator. AMI later approached Mr. Bezos's representatives with an offer.

Bezos's blogpost also included an email from Jon Fine, an AMI lawyer, seeking "a public, mutually-agreed upon acknowledgment from the Bezos Parties, released through a mutually-agreeable news outlet, affirming that they have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AM's coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces, and an agreement that they will cease referring to such a possibility".

A lot of them are pretty standard sexting gear, and I pass no judgement on Bezos or his alleged mistress for the majority of the contents revealed. He also pointed to owning The Post and their coverage of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi as potential reasons people could be targeting him.

The Enquirer has said that it obtained the texts and photos lawfully, and that it had the right to publish the material under the "fair use" doctrine of copyright law.

The National Enquirer threatened to publish Jeff Bezos' dick pics if he didn't rein in his personal investigator, and in response the Amazon CEO posted about it on Medium.

Bezos usually stays out of the public eye, frequently delegating announcements and public Amazon business updates to his executives.
