German ministers had discussed how to safeguard security in future 5G mobile networks, amid intense debate over whether to shut Huawei out of the market, sources separately told Reuters.

In the letter, Ryan Ding, president of Huawei's carrier business group, stated that the company "has never and will never" use its equipment to assist espionage activities for the Chinese government.

Reuters also reported that the Italian government has denied that it will ban Huawei and fellow Chinese networking company ZTE from its 5G rollouts.

A year ago a United Kingdom government report highlighted some areas of concern.

Other countries are carefully monitoring the Huawei situation, with its' chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who is the daughter of the company's founder, having been arrested in Canada previous year at the request of the USA over alleged violations of Iran sanctions.

The unit's most recent report cited a lack of progress in addressing previous concerns, but Huawei has promised to remedy this with a $2 billion investment over five years.

BERLIN-Germany's federal cybersecurity agency is investigating whether China's Huawei Technologies could be a security threat after warnings from other countries, the Funke group of newspapers reported on February 8, citing Economy Minister Peter Altmaier. The United States has been increasingly concerned that telecom equipment produced by Chinese companies as part of a global adoption of the next-generation 5G technology could pose serious security risks.

He said that while some countries - including New Zealand, Australia and the U.S. - had "indeed taken measures to restrict Huawei business activities", some of the restrictions had been "exaggerated or even misinterpreted by the media".

Huawei has offered to launch a cyber security center in Poland, Tonny Bao, head of the company's Polish unit, said on Wednesday. "We are ready to establish a cyber security center in Poland if authorities accept this as a trusted solution", Bao said.

Beyond the Old Continent, Huawei-made equipment is already banned for federal use in the United States which is now pressuring its allies into following suit.

The US is concerned that if its allies continue to use Huawei kit, then America's security will be threatened.

Complicating the situation is the Canadian arrest of a top Huawei executive sought on an extradition request by the U.S.
