Spike Lee is finally an Oscar victor.

Kevin Willmott, a film professor at Kansas, shared the award Sunday for best adapted screenplay Academy Award for "BlacKkklansman" with writer-director Spike Lee and co-writers Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz.

"First of all Spike, so glad you're sitting down", said Jackson who starred with Lee and Charles Barkley in a series of Capital One commercials. Do the Right Thing, about racial tensions in NY, was controversially snubbed at the 1990 Oscars in favour of Driving Miss Daisy, a fact that Lee alluded to when concluding his speech: "Let's do the right thing - you know I had to get that in there!" In 2016, Lee received an honorary Oscar for his career. Make the moral choice between love and hate. According to New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan, Lee's words were, "Do not turn that motherfucking clock on" in reference to the timer placed on all acceptance speeches.

At the conclusion of his speech, Lee exclaimed, "Do the right thing!".

BlacKkKlansman's script was based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth and follows his story as the first African American detective in the Colorado Springs police department as he sets out to infiltrate and expose a local chapter of the KKK. "It will be a powerful moment".

Alfonso Cuaron on Sunday won the best director Oscar for his deeply personal Roma, the third award of the night for the black-and-white ode to his childhood in Mexico City.
