Pakistan armed forces spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor claimed that IAF violated the LoC.

Twitter handle tweeted: "Indian aircrafts intruded from Muzafarabad sector".

The strike in Balakot is significant as the location is beyond Pakistan Administered Kashmir, indicating it was not merely an LoC violation but a punitive action inside Pakistani territory.

He said the governor also expressed sympathy and solidarity with family members of Thakur.

Another one of the aircraft, of which the Indian Air Force only has two, was spotted over the country's capital New Delhi in the aftermath of the incident, as well. There were "no casualties or damage".

The EU is also in contact with India, it said.

The attack was claimed by a Pakistan-based militant group, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and prompted a spike in tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan.

The EU also issued a statement for both India and Pakistan, urging nations to de-escalate tensions that have arisen in wake of the dastardly south Kashmir's Pulwama attack, orchestrated by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

About the February 14 Pulwama attack, the DG ISPR maintained that India has a history of "staging" such attacks before elections and events of worldwide importance.

So far, the "jaw-breaking response" ordered by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resulted in some 400 arrests of mostly Muslim activists and separatist leaders across Kashmir over the weekend.

Indian news agency Asian News International quoted Indian air force sources claiming 12 Mirage fighter jets had struck "a major terrorist camp" over the border with 1,000 kg of explosives. An actual strike in that area would be significant since it is not in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, but in Pakistan proper.

Pakistan's army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, in the past few days visited troops along the "Line of Control" to see their preparedness, according to the military media wing Inter-Services Public Relations.
