India has confirmed the loss of one warplane but claims it shot down a Pakistani jet in return which Islamabad denies. In December 2001, Jaish fighters, along with members of another Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, attacked India's parliament, which nearly led to a fourth war.

The two countries have fought three wars since independence from British colonial rule in 1947 and went to the brink a fourth in 2002 after a Pakistani militant attack on India's parliament.
