Why Congress Is (Properly) Redoing Much of the Mueller Probe

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, congressman Jerrold Nadler of NY, said Monday his panel is beginning the probe into possible obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power.

President Donald Trump today furiously branded a sweeping new investigation by Democrats of his inner circle a "big, fat, fishing expedition".

Co-host Ana Navarro (above center) said the House Intelligence Committee still "has a duty to investigate whether this campaign of Trump's colluded with Russian Federation", even though the committee has already investigated those allegations.

"Basically, they've started the campaign", Trump said Tuesday, "so the campaign begins".

The probe comes following mid-term elections in the U.S. that gave Democrats a majority over Trump's Republicans in the House.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., sent a large documents request to the White House that signaled how broad the investigations could be.

Trump argued that Democrats were more focused on investigations than "getting legislation passed".

The list of document requests also includes the National Rifle Association and Trump's embattled charitable foundation, which he is shutting down after agreeing to a court-supervised process.

In a tweet, Trump quoted Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity asserting that Democrats' tactics amount to "modern day McCarthyism".

Pakistan hands over captured Indian pilot
The aerial attacks across the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Indian and Pakistani territory are the first since a war in 1971. More than 200 people fled to a military organized camp about 20 kilometers (16 miles) away from the border.

"After recklessly prejudging the president for obstruction, Chairman Nadler is pursuing evidence to back up his conclusion because, as he admits, 'We don't have the facts yet, '" Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, said in a statement.

The White House refused to comment on this latest development, but they have been trying to rebuff document requests from the House Oversight Committee related to these clearances. Under a little-known law passed in the 1920s, the chairman of the House Ways and Ways Means Committee can request any individual's tax return and the law says the secretary of the Treasury "shall" turn it over.

The US intelligence community has concluded that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election, and that Putin ordered the influence campaign as a way to help elect Trump.

Among the committee's aims is determining whether Trump may have obstructed justice by ousting perceived enemies at the Justice Department, such as former FBI Director James Comey, and abused his presidential power by possibly offering pardons or tampering with witnesses.

Criminal inquiries into the Trump campaign's links to Russian Federation and other issues will carry on no matter what happens with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, as other prosecutors continue cases that began with him but now have a life of their own.

Co-host Sunny Hostin (above left) also urged Democrats to investigate seriously whether or not Trump violated the Emoluments Clause.

The move is already fuelling Republican charges that Mr Nadler's probe is a thin disguise for a predetermined outcome: impeachment. "But we're going to initiate proper investigations ... there can be crimes that are impeachable offenses and impeachable offenses that are not crimes".

Trump - and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin - have made clear they have zero plans to hand over the President's return to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Richard Neal, D- MA.
