Facebook Doesn't Allow Phone Number 'Look Up' Opt-Out

Users find they can't opt out of Facebook's phone number search function

This time, the Silicon Valley giant has been caught red-handed using people's cellphone numbers, provided exclusively for two-factor authentication, for targeted advertising and search - after it previously insinuated it wouldn't do that. But in case of phone numbers the option for "who can look you up using the phone number you provided" is surprisingly "everyone" by default. It can be restricted to "Friends of friends" or just "Friends", but the option defaults to "Everyone". Once again, Facebook was using a phone number, which users provided for security, for their own financial gain. "If the user isn't particularly security-minded, they'll have birthdates and addresses publicly viewable, too". Facebook recently warned popular health apps that use its API to be sure they have legal justification for sharing personal data with Facebook, seemingly indicating that the data major health apps are sharing with it, is data it hasn't asked for.

Facebook offers no way to opt out of that phone number search feature.

From then onwards, Facebook started asking page administrators to enable the two-factor-authentication.

Last year, the tech titan told Congress it collects information "from and about the computers, phones, connected TVs and other web-connected devices our users use that integrate with our products, and we combine this information across a user's different devices".

The firm introduced a way to use third-party authentication apps in lieu of phone numbers in May 2018.

Pretty much all the companies that deal with user data often encourage users to opt-in Two-factor authentication (2FA). To do that, users will need to click on Settings Privacy. Facebook's reply is less than convincing.

In any event, it may still be possible however to abuse Facebook's friend-finding feature by uploading large numbers of contacts via a mobile phone in the hope that Facebook will return a useful response for some of them. We've all been there; you create an account on a new service, and in a bid to find people to follow, you provide the service with access to your contacts. And not only to advertisers but also to normal users or you can say, regular users.

Currently, Facebook states numbers will be used "to help secure your account and more" but Burge claims the last two words were only added after it drew flak for ad-targeting.

Alex Stamos, Facebook's former chief security officer, chimed in on the latest privacy concern on Twitter, writing, "there was supposed to be a big project to segregate numbers" while he was there, but ultimately that project didn't happen.
