Paul Manafort Sentenced to Almost Four Years in Prison

Paul Manafort to be sentenced in Va. court

Judge Ellis told the court on Thursday: "He [Manafort] is not before the court for anything having to do with colluding with the Russian government".

Mueller is preparing to submit to U.S. Attorney General William Barr a report on his investigation into whether Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation and whether Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe.

In August 2018, Manafort was convicted by a jury in federal court in Virginia on two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud and one count of failing to disclose an offshore bank account.

At a February 13 hearing in Washington, Manafort attorney Kevin Downing said it was important that the allegation of Kilimnik's "known ties to Russian intelligence be countered, and be countered in a balanced manner".

The sentencing guidelines for Manafort's crimes call for between 19 and 24 years in prison but his defense attorneys have urged Judge TS Ellis to impose a "substantially" lower jail term. Manafort has shown little remorse, they say, and even lied under oath following a plea deal after the trial. The case revolved around Manafort's overseas work for oligarchs backing pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine and his efforts to keep that money from the USA government. It was a far cry from Manafort's usual dapper appearance and stylish garb.

It is now up to Ellis to determine how much time Manafort will spend in prison.

Even though he was in a wheelchair, he stood up for the judge's entrance - that's when he looked over at his wife.

Mr Trump's campaign co-chair Rick Gates, who was a business partner of Manafort and testified against him in court, is also awaiting sentence.

Manafort is scheduled to appear Thursday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, where he could get 20 years under federal guidelines but his lawyers have sought a shorter sentence.

Manafort has also been charged in Washington with money laundering, witness tampering and other offences and faces separate sentencing in that case on March 13. Although Mueller's team brought the charges against Manafort, his conviction was not related to potential collusion in the 2016 campaign. "My life, personally and professionally, is in shambles".

Manafort's lawyers argued that their client had engaged in what amounted to a routine tax evasion case, and cited numerous past sentences in which defendants had hidden millions from the IRS and served less than a year in prison.

It was the stiffest sentence yet given to an associate of the president in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling - but significantly lighter than many expected for the 69-year-old political consultant. Manafort replied, "I am your honor".

Manafort faces another sentencing next week in a Washington D.C. courtroom, where he could be handed a prison term of up to 10 years.

Mueller's charges led to the stunning downfall of Manafort, a prominent figure in Republican Party circles for decades who also worked as a consultant to such global figures as former Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi, former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and Yanukovych.
