Manchester United legend David Beckham was subjected to a merciless prank from friend and talk show host James Corden prior to the recent unveiling of the statue of him in full LA Galaxy kit at StubHub Center, paying homage to the ex-England captain as the club's greatest player.

For what it's worth, the actual statue unveiling went off without a hitch on March 3rd, featuring a much more legitimate statue of Beckham which now takes pride of place outside the LA Galaxy stadium.

Beckham had been duped into thinking the statue would be displayed outside his former club LA Galaxy's stadium.

Beckham himself had not seen the finalized version of the genuine statue, which now stands outside of the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, so Corden had the ideal opportunity to trick the unwitting athlete.

The sketch was filmed just before a real statue in Beckham's honour was revealed outside the Dignity Health Sports Park in California, the home of Beckham's former USA football team.

The star clapped politely before raising his issues with the actor playing the sculptor, saying: "It's slightly different from what it was when I saw it in Chicago". "Look at my chin! I really don't see how this can go out", Beckham went on.

"Look at my chin...look at my eyes. I honestly look like Stretch Armstrong!" "The only thing that looks good is the hair and that's about it. Look at my bum, look at my arse", he lamented.

After a forklift driver "accidentally" destroyed the offending statue, Corden ran out from behind the scenes and surprised Beckham, who laughed and cursed at the late-night host.

Finally ending the prank, the star giggled when comedian James Corden walked on set and a looking relieved Beckham said: "Thank God for that!"
