Infiniti's killing off the QX30, and pulling out of Western Europe

As a result the Q30 auto and QX30 sports-utility vehicle will no longer be made in the UK. Both models are sold globally but produced only in Britain.

Infiniti announced on Tuesday that it intends to withdraw from Western Europe in 2020. Infiniti will continue its operations as usual in Eastern Europe.

Product-wise, the company will focus on selling SUVs especially in North America, but will also launch five new cars on the Chinese market in the years ahead. A year ago the company delivered just 6,000 units in the region.

Around 250 employees at the Sunderland auto factory are dedicated to Infiniti production. Infiniti says it's working to find "alternative opportunities for any employees who would be affected".

It added: 'As a result of this restructuring plan, production of the Q30 and QX30 is to cease by mid-2019 at the manufacturing location in Sunderland, UK.

In a statement, Unite national officer Steve Bush said the decision, while driven by poor sales, was "obviously sad news".

It said Infiniti cars would be electrified from 2021, while high-polluting diesel-powered models will be discontinued in response to strong consumer and regulatory demand for cleaner transport.

Infiniti plans to divert its resources to markets with bigger opportunities from a region where non-European premium brands are struggling to compete against local players such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Infiniti Motor Co, the luxury division of Japanese automaker Nissan, says it's withdrawing from western Europe - offering another blow to carmakers in the United Kingdom bracing for Britain's departure from the European Union.

Responding to today's announcement, Unite said it would be seeking assurances on future employment and was confident of securing redeployment opportunities for the 200-plus workers affected.
