Deliveries of Boeing's best-selling 737 MAX jets were effectively frozen, though production continued, after the USA joined a global grounding of the narrowbody model over safety concerns, industry sources said.

"We are doing everything we can to understand the cause of the accidents in partnership with the investigators, deploy safety enhancements and help ensure this does not happen again", the company said.

An FAA team is on the ground in Ethiopia assisting with the investigation alongside the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

Both Air Canada and WestJet tweeted they will be complying with the precautionary grounding and advised customers to expect delays in rebooking.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed minutes into its flight. He said the data provides an indication of the plane's course and its vertical profile.
