The New York Post reported that police sources said the shooter hit Cali with multiple bullets and a 911 caller said they heard six or seven shots.

Cali is the first mob boss to be taken out since John Gotti Sr. orchestrated the assassination of then-Gambino boss Paul Castellano in 1985, according to The New York Post.

Witnesses to the crime said the killers reportedly ran over Cali's body with a blue pickup truck after he was shot to make sure he was dead, according to the police, as The Daily Beast reported.

Witnesses told New York Daily News "there were like six shots, and then there were three more".

Detectives stand over the body of reputed mob boss Paul Castellano, after his execution outside of Sparks Steakhouse on 46th St.in December 1985.

The influence of the Gambinos waned in the 1990s after a number of members turned government informers and several leaders were imprisoned.

Sterling hat-trick boosts City's lead at top of table
Coach Pep Guardiola's men have now opened four points gap pending Liverpool's tie against Burnley at Anfireld on Sunday. Burley believes Liverpool are at a disadvantage as they play the day after Pep Guardiola's side hosts Watford (5.30pm).

He had just one criminal conviction: an extortion charge in 2008 for an attempted shake down of a trucker working at a proposed NASCAR race track in Staten Island.

The family was headed by Domenico Cefalu until 2015, when Frank Cali took over as capo. Gotti and his turncoat underboss, Sammy "Bull" Gravano reportedly watched the action from nearby.

It was a marked change from the Gotti era, which brought with its unnecessary attention and exposure.

Business Insider said Cali essentially was in charge of New York City's city's food industry and was worth an estimated $30 million. Cali was married to Rosaria Inzerillo.

The Gambino family was once considered the biggest organised crime group in the U.S., the New York Times reports, but began to decline after Gotti and other senior figures were jailed.

Unlike other mobsters, Cali had few run-ins with the law.

In June 2008, Cali pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort money and was jailed in Brooklyn, before being released the following year.
