Before Friday's attack, New Zealand's deadliest shooting in modern history took place in 1990 in the small town of Aramoana, where a gunman killed 13 people following a dispute with a neighbor.

Among the wounded, two were in critical condition, including a four-year-old child, said Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

He is set to appear before New Zealand's High Court on April 5.

The attack was carried out by 28-year-old white man Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who has been charged with murder ever since.
