Cancer experts found that people consuming 700ml/day drinks at 60C or high were "consistenly associated" with a 90% risk of the diesease compared to people who drank liquids at a lower temperature.

The researchers said that it would be "reasonable" to extrapolate their results to other types of hot drink.

"Our research has also shown that people can reduce their risk of oesophageal cancer by being a healthy weight and cutting down on alcohol".

"Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee, or other hot beverages,"said lead author Dr. Farhad Islami".

The worldwide study followed the drinking habits of 50,045 people, aged between 40 and 75, in Iran and found 317 new cases of cancer between 2004 and 2017. This is even more significant in relation to the fact that the World Health Organisation considers drinking beverages equal to or above 65°C to be unsafe.

Researchers collected information on how long the participants waited between tea being poured and drunk and if they liked it warm, lukewarm, hot or very hot. However, until now, there have been no studies which have examined the association using prospectively and objectively measured tea drinking temperature.

Tea lovers who prefer drinking their relaxing brew really hot are putting themselves at a greater risk of throat cancer, says a report published this week in the International Journal of Cancer.

Previous studies have found that smokers and drinkers who drink hot tea are more at risk of cancer of the gullet. However, in parts of South America, Asia, and Africa, people tend to drink their tea much hotter.

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 17,650 new cases of esophageal cancer this year - 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women - and 16,080 of those diagnosed will die from it.

In 2016, the International Agency for Research on Cancer said that drinking any drink over 65 degrees Celsius makes it a carcinogen, or something likely to cause cancer.
