"I today submitted to IRS Commissioner Rettig my request for six years of the president's personal tax returns as well as the returns for some of his business entities. But if in a year from now drugs continue to pour in we're going to put tariffs on", he said. The IRS is to hand over Mr Trump's personal tax records dating from 2013 to 2018, as well as those for eight of his Trump brand companies.

"They'll speak to my lawyers, they'll speak to the attorney general", Trump told reporters during an unrelated press event in the Oval Office.

In a tweet Thursday, the president panned the Democrats' week of demands as "the highest level of Presidential Harassment in the history of our Country", repeating a phrase he has often used to describe Congress' constitutionally mandated oversight of the executive branch. "Oh, usually it's 10 so I guess they're giving up". Trump, a Republican and wealthy businessman, did not do so.

Trump eschewed standard presidential protocol and didn't release his tax returns because he figured they would be damaging to him.

The Democratic chairman who's demanding to see President Trump's tax returns says he'd have no problem releasing his own returns - later.

Neal is one of only three congressional officials authorized to make a written request to the Treasury secretary for anyone's tax returns.

Democratic-led U.S. House panel authorizes subpoenas for Mueller report, evidence
He has been an editor and writer for the New York Times , the Wall Street Journal, HuffPost and Talk magazine. These are extremely important questions, that will only be answered when the report is finally made public.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose tariffs on vehicle imports from Mexico unless it does more to stop illegal migrants and drug trafficking, his latest warning to America's southern neighbour to tighten border security. Neal went on to say that if others released their taxes he would, as well. "We will examine the request and we will follow the law. and we will protect the president as we would protect any taxpayer" regarding their right to privacy, Mnuchin said.

A week ago, he said Republican lawmakers would adopt a new plan to repeal and replace the national health care policies that were the signature domestic legislative achievement of his Democratic predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

"We're under audit, despite what people said", Trump said.

While speaking to reporters Wednesday, House Oversight chairman Elijah Cummings said Mazars USA will comply with the panel's request, but only if they can formalize the process through what Cummings called a "friendly subpoena".

Trump backed off days of Twitter comments saying he was about to close the border after White House economic advisers and Republican lawmakers warned him that closing the border would significantly affect the US economy, the world's largest.

In a statement accompanying his letter, Neal said the request was about "policy, not politics", and "in no way based on emotion of the moment or partisanship". "If the president insists that he is above the law and directs that the unequivocal mandate be ignored, we should move forward immediately with legal action". The returns would have to remain private unless the Ways and Means Committee and House voted to release them, which could start a fresh round of wrangling with the White House.
