Dallas County Health and Human Services reported its first confirmed case of measles in a Dallas resident since 2017.

During the investigation, officials found that while the patient was infectious, the patient was in MI and Texas. However, businesses in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan could be affected.

People who may have been exposed elsewhere were being notified directly, the Health Department said. It spreads either through direct contact with an infected person or through the air when the patient coughs or sneezes.

Statewide, the numbers of measles cases this year climbed to 39 as of Friday, with 38 in Oakland County and one in Wayne County.

Oakland County has been hit the hardest with all but one of the state's measles cases, though an outlier was confirmed in Wayne County last month. MDHHS follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance and does not recommend routine measles vaccinations for children less than 12 months of age unless there is a suspected measles exposure; there is thought to be an imminent measles exposure such as being in areas of known measles; or global travel planned. The last time the state had this many measles cases was in 1991 when 65 cases were reported.

The measles vaccine is highly effective and very safe. White spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and mouth form two to three days after symptoms begin and a rash that is blotchy and bumpy begins on the face and spreads to the arms and legs three to five days after noticeable symptoms.

Starting in April, Northern Health will be distributing immunization consent packages, through schools, directly to students in kindergarten through Grade 12 who are not up to date with their vaccinations. If your child received an immunization consent package but has documented measles vaccine elsewhere, please include this information on the immunization consent form in the space provided. "If there is any sign of symptoms to contact your healthcare provider prior to showing up at that provider's office so that appropriate arrangements can be made for examination or treatment", states Daniel E. Regenye, OCHD Public Health Coordinator.

People who should not get the vaccine include those who are pregnant, immune-compromised, or allergic to a component of the MMR vaccine, Ryan said.
