As early as Monday, the Trump administration will announce its decision to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday night.

Iran will take reciprocal action against the US if Washington designates the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as terrorists, a majority of Iranian parliamentarians said on Sunday, according to state news agency IRNA.

United States officials say an announcement could come as early as tomorrow, after a months-long escalation in the administration's rhetoric against Iran.

The US has already blacklisted dozens of entities and individuals affiliated with the IRGC, but not the group as a whole.

The move has been rumored for years, but the decision to act is one more step in the Trunp administration policy of piling pressure on the Islamic Republic.

"#NetanyahuFirsters who have long agitated for FTO designation of the IRGC fully understand its consequences for U.S. forces in the region", Zarif wrote on Twitter, referring to supporters of Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, Iran's regional arch-enemy.

The Trump administration has already imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran after withdrawing past year from an global agreement under which Tehran drastically scaled back its nuclear programme.

Defense officials have told CNN that United States troops in Syria and Iraq often find themselves operating in close proximity to members of the IRGC.

"We will answer any action taken against this force with a reciprocal action", 255 Iranian lawmakers said in a letter over the weekend, according to Reuters.

"This long overdue designation in memory of thousands of Americans, Iranians, Europeans, Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Lebanese, Israelis, Saudis, Bahrainis, Argentines - & from many other countries - murdered, maimed, tortured & brutalized by IRGC terrorists", tweeted Mark Dubowitz, chief executive at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the IRGC was founded toward the end of Iran's 1979 revolution due to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's distrust of the Iranian military.
