Ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage launches Brexit Party

Second Brexit referendum vote could happen, says Hammond

Less than a fortnight after the vote, which saw Britons choose to leave the bloc by a slim majority, Farage resigned as UKIP leader, saying he had "done his bit" to get the United Kingdom out of the EU.

The government has indicated that Britain could still leave the European Union before those elections if the two main parties could reach a compromise on a Brexit agreement in the next couple of weeks.

Farage said on Friday that he will stand for the Brexit Party in the European Parliament elections, along with several other candidates including Annunziata Rees-Mogg, the sister of prominent pro-Brexit Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg.

It would win 296 seats of the 650 parliamentary seats, against 259 for the Conservatives.

Martin Baxter from Electoral Calculus told the Sunday Telegraph: "Theresa May is discovering why David Cameron really held the referendum. That process seems to have restarted and the Conservatives are beginning to suffer".

An Opinium poll published in the Observer newspaper showed the Conservatives at 29 percent, down 6 points from March 28 and 7 points behind Labour.

"This party is not here just to fight the European elections".

Eurosceptic Iain Duncan Smith, a former Conservative Party leader, said May should be ready to quit in June.

Talks between the opposition Labour Party and the government have not produced a breakthrough in the Brexit impasse.

"What the prime minister has to do now is aim everything towards departure before the euros (European elections) which would then allow her to step away having done what she said she would do - get the United Kingdom out of the European Union one way or the other", he told Sky News.

Lidington said: "These are hard, delicate negotiations where we are testing out other people's ideas".

"If we're going to reach an agreement on this there's going to need to be movement from both sides", he said.

The two parties have set up a series of working groups in key areas, such as environmental standards, security and workers' rights, to try and find common ground.

Britain's exit from the European Union was postponed by a late night agreement in Brussels last week that gave Prime Minister Theresa May until Oct 31 to persuade parliament to approve the terms of the country's departure.

He said that although a no-deal Brexit appeared less likely, he hoped a recently signed EU-Japan trade deal would roll over to the United Kingdom if it left without a deal.
