Yet measles persists in close-knit and insular communities-the Amish in OH, for example, Minnesota's Somali populations, and Eastern European enclaves in Washington state-that don't commonly vaccinate children. The parents of three children might also be summoned and fined for not vaccinating their children as per the Emergency Order.

Israeli health officials issued an alert earlier this month about a measles patient who had traveled on El Al Flight 2 on March 26 and 27 from NY to Tel Aviv.

According to the World Health Organization, measles is "almost entirely preventable through two doses of a safe and effective vaccine".

Heath officials say they've confirmed a case of measles in Tennessee.

US public health experts have said that one dose of the MMR vaccine is about 93 percent effective at preventing measles, an extremely contagious virus that can have serious consequences - pneumonia, hearing loss, brain damage and death. "We continue to encourage all Marylanders to get vaccinated or check with their health care providers to ensure they and their families are up-to-date on vaccinations".

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two doses of MMR vaccine are around 97 percent effective at preventing measles, while one dose is about 93 percent effective.

Sun added: "People born between 1957 and 1989 generally only had one MMR dose". For example, they may fear that the vaccine raises their child's risk of autism, a falsehood based on a debunked and fraudulent claim.

"Obviously the national context of having hundreds of cases and in 20 states, and seeing continued spread, raises the angst here", Jones says.

"The measles component in that vaccine has a 96 to 98 percent efficacy, so if you get the vaccine you are protected", Swann said.

Since the Emergency Order took effect, the city's Health Department has identified three children who were exposed to measles but were still unvaccinated by April 12.

The measles can be especially risky for children.
