Trump Says It Directly: "Mueller Should Not Testify"

Then-FBI Director Robert Mueller testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee

The comments set up a confrontation with Democrats who are already irate over what they view as an increasingly brazen administration stone-walling.

Barr testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday but said he would not come back again. But with Trump resisting other congressional investigations, and testimony from Mueller likely on the horizon, the impeachment question seems unlikely to subside for long.

"Bob Mueller should not testify", Trump said in an afternoon tweet. He declined to make a decision on whether President Donald Trump should be charged with obstructing the investigation.

Democrats want Mueller to testify to provide additional details about the findings he made and conclusions he drew after 22 months of investigating whether Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election, and whether the president had tried to interfere with that investigation.

Trump responded to comments by House Judiciary Committee member, Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., that Mueller was tentatively scheduled to testify on May 15 about his report on potential collusion with Russian Federation and obstruction of justice by the president and his campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

"Just to clarify: we are aiming to bring Mueller in on the 15th, but nothing has been agreed to yet", Cicilline said in the tweet.

Trump also insisted that Mueller's 448-page report found "no collusion" and "no obstruction", overstating the conclusions of the almost two-year investigation. Although Democrats have initiated more than 60 individual investigations into the Trump White House, the Trump campaign, and Trump businesses, their primary focus appears to be on the President's campaign team.

"I think it's imperative for Mueller to testify".

The attorney general has been widely criticized by Democrats and some conservatives for how he has handled the release of Mueller's findings.

The committee's chairman, Representative Jerrold Nadler of NY, had previously said he was hoping for an appearance by Mueller on that date. He reiterated that position in testimony last week before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"If the department persists in its baseless refusal to comply with a validly issued subpoena, the committee will move to contempt proceedings and seek further legal recourse", Nadler wrote.

"I don't think I can let him. because he was the counsel", Trump told Fox in an interview aired Thursday. In one instance, the report said McGahn defied an order from the president to remove Mueller from the investigation.
