National Free Comic Book Day hoping to get more kids into reading

Among the characters and story lines you'll be able to read about in issues given away on Free Comic Book Day 2019 are titles featuring Spider-Man, Star Wars, The Tick, Spawn, Punchline, Robotech, Little Lulu, Casper, Bob's Burgers, Riverdale, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Doctor Who, and the Avengers.

In its first six years, news stories said, more than 2,000 retailers in more than 30 countries gave away more than 12 million comic books.

Not every comic book store is going to be handing out free copies and special editions. "And all of them are free!" says Vault of Midnight Event Coordinator Kaitlin Diemer. Hundreds of people came in the store today and claimed up to 50 comic books each.

Kinokuniya is celebrating Free Comic Book Day this Saturday (May 4) by doing as the event suggests.

This year's iteration in the USA features a total of 51 title sponsors, including Riverdale, the comic based on the Netflix series based on the Archie comic series.

Stadium Comics will also have tons of free stuff available and a 25 percent discount off everything in the store. There will be limits on comics, but most stores will let you take as many as you want as long as you make a charitable donation.

Many comic book writers and artists will also be holding signings at stores around the US.

The "holiday" dedicated to free comics has been celebrated for years. But that's not all that's happening Saturday.
