iOS 12.3 is out now with overhauled TV app

Apple announced the new TV app as part of its Apple TV+ and broader services announcement in late March.

The company is launching a redesigned version of the Apple TV app as it also prepares to launch its new TV+ streaming service later this year. Apple's iOS 12.3 and tvOS 12.3 updates will bring the revamped Apple TV app to all compatible devices along with support for AirPlay 2.As of now, the new Apple TV app only allows consumers to watch and rent movies in India. The Watch Now section in this new app features Up Next, where users can quickly find and watch their favorites with activity synced across devices, as well as explore expertly curated collections based on a secure and comprehensive understanding of users' viewing interests. Upwards of 500 titles featuring 4K resolution, many with HDR10 or Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) are available. A show's past seasons, for example, might be available on Hulu, Netflix Inc or iTunes, while current episodes require cable or purchase, leaving customers juggling multiple remotes.

The tech giant offered Deadline and other media outlets a preview of the service last week, emphasizing that executives would speak only on background and not about Apple TV+. Early partner channels include HBO, Starz, Showtime and Tastemade, with more expected to join in the future, Apple said. Apple notes that Apple TV will be the "first and only place" where HBO subscribers can download movies and shows such as the about-to-conclude Game of Thrones.

Also today, Apple released the macOS Mojave 10.14.5 software update for Mac users, which also adds AirPlay 2 support for sharing videos, photos, music, and lots more from your Mac computer to a smart TV that supports AirPlay 2, better audio latency on MacBook Pro 2018 models, and better support for large OmniOutliner and OmniPlan documents.

With AirPlay 2, owners of updated Samsung smart TV owners will be able to stream videos and other content from iPhones, iPads, and Mac PCs directly to the TV. Support for Vizio, LG, and Sony TVs is coming later this year, and support for Roku and Fire TV devices is in the works as well.
