The department's inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, is separately examining investigators' use of wiretap applications and informants and whether any political bias against Mr. Trump influenced investigative decisions.

And on Tuesday, Trump told reporters he "didn't understand" FBI Director Christopher Wray's "ridiculous" answer that the FBI didn't spy when looking into then-candidate Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 election. "I am so proud of our attorney general that he is looking into it".

The former attorney general Jeff Sessions had appointed another U.S. attorney, John Huber, in March 2018 to review aspects of the Russian Federation investigation, following grievances from Republican lawmakers.

Barr has said that he expects the investigation of the inspector general to wrap up this month or in early June.

Despite being a Trump appointee, Durham was recommended for the position by Connecticut's Democratic senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy who characterized him as having earned "immense respect as a no-nonsense, fierce and fair prosecutor".

Just as Durham gets going, other Justice Department probes into spying are coming to an end.

Wray said last week that he did not consider court-approved Federal Bureau of Investigation surveillance to be "spying" and said he had no evidence the Federal Bureau of Investigation illegally monitored Trump's campaign.

Congressional Republicans have also indicated they intend to examine how the investigation that has shadowed Trump's presidency began and whether there are any legal concerns. He has previously investigated law enforcement corruption, the destruction of Central Intelligence Agency videotapes and the Boston FBI office's relationship with mobsters.

President Trump recently referred to the Russian Federation investigation as one of the biggest hoaxes in USA history. Former F.B.I. and Justice Department officials have defended the genesis of the investigation, saying it was properly predicated.

FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before a Senate panel last week that he wasn't aware of any improper spying, a comment Trump said he found "ridiculous".

Congressional Republicans have also indicated they intend to examine how the investigation that shadowed Trump's presidency for almost two years began and whether there are any legal concerns.

Durham's team was responsible for indicting Bulger cronies Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi and special agent John Connolly Jr. portrayed in "Black Mass", according to The Day.

In November 2017, then Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed John Huber, the US attorney in Utah, to work with Horowitz to determine whether or not allegations of FISA abuse warrant investigation.

"Whoever is investigating this, tell them to look for emails between (then CIA Director John) Brennan and (then FBI Director James) Comey and December of 2016", he said.
