UK: Theresa May to bring Brexit deal back to lawmakers in June

Theresa May has announced that she will bring her Brexit deal back to Britain's parliament, for lawmakers to vote on for a fourth time, in the first week of June.

May met with Corbyn "to make clear our determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

He said: "I think if the House of Commons does not approve the WAB, then the Barnier deal is dead in that form and I think the House will have to then address a much more fundamental question between whether it will pursue. a no-deal option or whether it will revoke".

MPs will vote next month on the legislation that would enshrine the Prime Minister's Brexit plan in law.

Almost three years since the United Kingdom voted 52% to 48% to leave the European Union (EU), there is still no agreement among British politicians about when, how or even if the divorce should take place.

All recent polling points to victory for Nigel Farage's Brexit Party which has eaten into support for the Conservatives and his former party UKIP.

"If the House (of Commons) has not passed the Withdrawal Agreement Bill then there are growing voices in Europe, not least the French, who want to move on to other issues", he said.

It does have the feel of end of days for Theresa May as prime minister.

She is due to meet senior Tory MPs on the backbench 1922 Committee's executive on Thursday for talks about her future.

Neither the Conservatives nor Labour expect the cross-party talks to produce a deal, and both sides now also have cold feet over allowing MPs to choose the way forward through indicative votes.

The ongoing Brexit shambles has already brought about enormous damage, which would only be exacerbated if we actually leave the EU.

Dominic Raab, the UK's Brexit secretary, who was nominally the chief British negotiator for the deal now on the table said on Thursday: " I can not in good conscience support the terms proposed for our deal with the European Union".

Allies of the Prime Minister attempted to calm Tory fears about the prospect of a damaging split in the party over a customs union - Labour's key demand in the talks.

The bill would need to get through all its different stages before recess, which is why the week of 3 June has been set, coming after the European elections and parliament's Whitsun recess.

"We have serious concerns about negotiating with a government that is in the process of disintegration and what has been said about what might happen if a new Tory (Conservative) leadership is in charge", a Labour spokesman said.

"If the prime minister brings the withdrawal bill to the Commons for a vote, the question will be "what has changed"?" asked Nigel Dodds, parliamentary leader of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which props up May's minority government.

They argue, such a proposal would mean Northern Ireland being treated differently to the rest of the United Kingdom and remaining in a customs union with the EU indefinitely. There is also pressure on Labour to insist on a second referendum.

After a marathon Cabinet meeting earlier on Tuesday, ministers agreed to continue the cross-party efforts to break the impasse but stressed it was "imperative" for a Brexit deal to get through Parliament by the summer recess.
